Aerial view of Almuñécar coastline with mountains, blue sky
The destination

Where the court ends and the Mediterranean begins.

Almuñécar is not Torremolinos. No high-rise blocks, no package-holiday crowds. It's a working Andalusian town with a Phoenician harbour, a Moorish castle, and enough excellent restaurants to eat differently every night of your stay.

The microclimate

Spain's most days of sun.

The Costa Tropical has a genuine subtropical microclimate — it's the warmest point on mainland Spain's Mediterranean coast. Winters are mild enough for outdoor tennis year-round. Spring and autumn, the prime ATA season, average 22°C with low humidity and extraordinary light.

The season runs October to June. Mild winters, 22°C average in spring and autumn, and 320+ days of sun.

Castillo de San Miguel with sea below, daytime

Castillo de San Miguel

Phoenician, Roman, Arabic, and Spanish — Almuñécar's castle layers 3,000 years of history into one hilltop. The views from the battlements reach the Sierra Nevada on a clear day.

Almuñécar beach in spring, few people, crystal water

The beaches

Playa de San Cristóbal in town, La Herradura fifteen minutes east, Playa de La Rijana for snorkelling — the water is warmer here than anywhere else on the Spanish coast.

Friday market stalls in the town square, fresh produce and locals

Town life

The Friday market, the old town's tapas bars, the tropical fruit stalls selling custard apples and avocados grown right here. Almuñécar has a 14,000-strong local population and no interest in being a resort.
